Iris is a highly configurable and flexible service for paging and messaging.

Overview

Iris Build Status License Gitter chat

Iris core, API, UI and sender service. For third-party integration support, see iris-relay, a stateless proxy designed to sit at the edge of a production network and allow external traffic to pass through. We also have an Iris mobile app for iOS/Android, at the iris-mobile repo.

Setup database

  1. remove ONLY_FULL_GROUP_BY from MySQL config sql_mode
  2. create mysql schema: mysql -u USER -p < ./db/schema_0.sql
  3. import dummy data: mysql -u USER -p -o iris < ./db/dummy_data.sql

dummy_data.sql contains the following entities:

  • user demo with password demo
  • team demo_team
  • application Autoalerts with key: a7a9d7657ac8837cd7dfed0b93f4b8b864007724d7fa21422c24f4ff0adb2e49

Setup dev environment

  1. create & source your virtualenv
  2. install build dependencies: libssl-dev libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev libsasl2-dev python-dev libldap2-dev
  3. run pip install -e '.[dev,kazoo]'
  4. edit ./configs/config.dev.yaml to setup database credential and other settings

To install iris with extra features, you can pass in feature flag with pip:

pip install -e '.[prometheus]'

For list of extra features, please see extras_require setting in setup.py.

Run everything

forego start

Run web server

make serve

Run sender

iris-sender configs/config.dev.yaml

Tests

Run tests:

make test # all tests, e2e + unit
make e2e  # e2e tests
make unit  # unit tests

Generate test coverage reports:

make e2e-cov
make unit-cov

Adding new plugins

  1. create the plugin file under src/iris/plugins dir
  2. edit src/iris/plugins/__init__.py to add plugin module to __all__ list

  • Add (Prometheus) Alertmanager support

    Add (Prometheus) Alertmanager support

    This is done directly in Iris in order to minimize dependencies for such a crucial function.

    In Alertmanager, one would simply use the alert label "iris_plan" to select the Iris plan.

    HMAC authentication is disabled, as this isn't supported by Alertmanager. Instead, application name and key are passed in the query string.

    An example snippet that can be added to Alertmanager's config:

            receivers:
            - name: 'iris-team1'
              webhook_configs:
                - url: http://iris:16649/v0/alertmanager?application=test-app&key=sdffdssdf

    Enable support for both Python 2.x and 3.x

    As subsequent changes are no longer forthcoming to the 2.x branch of Python projects should begin the process of cross compatibility. This issue is being opened to collect outstanding issues and note blockers, should other users attempt to run Iris with Python 3.x.

    css paths missing

    Tried an installation of Iris and got it running, but there is no CSS displayed in the browser. Static logo is working. Tried looking a bit in the source code and the CSS link path is empty when I do inspect source, so my guess is that there is something wrong in the templating where it sais ASSET_URL. Not sure how to fix it though.

  •  IRIS ldap not working

    IRIS ldap not working

    Hi,

    My goal is to enable LDAP authentication for Iris.

    I'm using Iris in a Docker container built from Master branch (Commits on Apr 11, 2022: 6a8a70b1a377636dacdd580e2ba226880be2d79a).

    Users are already created in Oncall, LDAP authentication works in Oncall, and user synchronization from oncal to iris is also functional.

    I added to the Iris configuration an Auth section very similar to what I already have in oncall but this causes the unavailability of Iris.

    #LDAP Auth
    auth:
      ldap_url: 'ldap://ldap.mycorp.intra'
      ldap_user_suffix: ''
      ldap_bind_user: 'MYCORP\svc-iris'
      ldap_bind_password: 'XXXXXXXXX'
      ldap_base_dn: 'DC=mycorp,DC=intra'
      ldap_search_filter: '(&(objectClass=person)(sAMAccountName=%s))'

    The web interface returns the error message Internal Server Error

    Logfile /home/iris/var/log/uwsgi/error.log contains --- no python application found, check your startup logs for errors ---

    I'm not sure it's a bug maybe I wrote the configuration wrong. Can you help me?

    Looks like this version of python-ldap is broken? Current version is 3.1.0. Related to #255 ?

    I'm able to install python-ldap==2.4.9 on python 2.7.10 without issue though, so unsure what source of the problem is.

  • Add documentation on Oncall/Iris integration for messaging

    Add documentation on Oncall/Iris integration for messaging

    It is not clear to me from the documentation or config comments what config settings are required in order for Oncall to be able to pull from notification_queue and then trigger out a message to the recipient via Iris as the sender. I'm using the annotated config provided via a553c1e from #334, which seems to call out the default values related to SMTP, vendor, etc, and likewise I have an entry in the plugin section of Oncall's config defined for iris_messenger. Yet I'm unable to get email messages triggered out of either Iris (via Incident creation) or On-Call (via Reminders/Notifications). Notification_queue continues to hold a ton of rows all marked with NULL for column SENT. Long story short, additional documentation on using Iris as the messaging system would be appreciated.

    API key

    Hi, I'm trying to trigger an incident using the API. But I can't figure out how to get the API key. Is it created automatically with the creation of an application or how does it work? Was also unable to create a new application from UI. Is this something that has to be done via the config file?

  • Support oncall schedules that are not 24/7

    Support oncall schedules that are not 24/7

    At our company, we have the following use case:

    • Alert is created
    • If office hours, TeamA is notified
    • If outside office hours, TeamB is notified

    I've set this up in Iris with a plan that:

    • In step 1 has 2 Notifications
    • The first points to TeamA in oncall as primary
    • The second points to TeamB in oncall as primary

    In Oncall:

    • TeamA has someone oncall during office hours
    • TeamB has someone oncall outside of office hours.

    This works, but results in notifications going to the plan creator:

    You are receiving this as you created this plan and we can't resolve oncall-primary of TeamA at this time.

    Now I could suppress this message by making some code changes, but before I take that route (and potentially lose visibility into actual issues resolving oncall-primaries), I'd like to know if there is better way to achieve what I want.

    Edit: alternatively, I could add a dummy user with the drop mode and use that to fill in the gaps in the calendar for both teams..

  • Applications are not properly loaded when using uwsgi

    Applications are not properly loaded when using uwsgi

    When running iris in combination with uwsgi (e.g with the container image), the applications are not properly loaded at startup, leading to 401 errrors when using the webhooks api. Once the applications are fully loaded (e.g. by open iris ui with a web browser), the authentication error goes away without modifying the api call.

    Steps to reproduce:

    • clone the master branch of the repo
    • docker-compose build && docker-compose up -d
    • Try to post alertmanager data on the webhook api
      • curl -v -X POST -d @prom-alert.json 'http://localhost:16649/v0/webhooks/alertmanager?application=oncall&key=magic'
      • Will return HTTP/401: {"title":"Authentication failure","description":"Application not found"}
    • Open Iris UI in a browser and login: http://localhost:16649 with demo/any password
      • or call the application api endpoint: curl -v http://localhost:16649/v0/applications
    • Try again the post the same alertmanager data on the api webhook again
      • curl -v -X POST -d @prom-alert.json 'http://localhost:16649/v0/webhooks/alertmanager?application=oncall&key=magic'
      • The incident is properly created and return HTTP/1.1 201 Created

    Some additional logging information: I've modified https://github.com/linkedin/iris/blob/master/src/iris/cache.py#L52 to print when the applications are loaded.

    This looks like the application cache is not properly populated on startup of the application.

    I wasn't able to reproduce the issue with a local setup with gunicorn.

  • Status of Container Images

    Status of Container Images

    I'd like to raise a few questions around the current container images of Iris:

    • Currently there are two Dockerfiles, one in the root directory and one in the ops/Docker directory. The second one isn't maintained anymore and should be removed, or?
      • Bonus Questions: The ops/packer, ops/terraform and ops/charts are also outdated and don't seem to be maintained. Should those go away, too? (I might be looking into proving an updated helm charts with version 2 in the next weeks).
    • Is there any plan to provide pre-build container images? There seems to be an "official" registry (https://quay.io/repository/iris/iris), but the images are 3 years old. If there's no plan I will start building "unofficial" images.
    • I'm currently trying to improve the container image by running the image "rootless" (https://github.com/linkedin/iris/commit/c4123e450cef36a4c5271e4f2550d55f5f73d434), which would mean that iris user has only limited write access to the container image. I'm having trouble finding a good solution for the sender rpc log file. any hints/comments here? I'm currently patching the config file to update, but this doesn't seem to be the best way to handle this.
    • Was there a specific reason for the initializedfile? It doesn't seem to provide any real benefit to me in a container environment.
      • in production setups, database will get initialized once either manually from outside a container or by starting a container with DOCKER_DB_BOOTSTRAP
      • In development setups, containers will be rebuild quite often and reinitialize will happen anyway as the initializedfile isn't existing.

    Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • Feature request: Extract fields from AlertManager labels into top level context

    Feature request: Extract fields from AlertManager labels into top level context

    Hey folks, I'm liking Iris so far. I'd like to check receptiveness to this change - I'm happy to put up a PR for this, as it would help us.

    Problem

    The AlertManager integration doesn't currently support the "override incident title" and "plan dynamic targets" features.

    AlertManager sends a payload in this (slightly redacted) format:

    {
      "groupKey": "Demo system down",
      "status": "firing",
      "groupLabels": {"iris_plan": "page-engineer", "severity":"critical", "service":"demo-system"},
      "commonLabels": {"iris_plan": "page-engineer", "severity":"critical", "service":"demo-system"},
      "commonAnnotations": {"team":"demo-team", "runbook_url": "https://example.org", "description": "The service is down!"}
    }

    Since the groupLabels.iris_plan is set to an existing plan (page-engineer) the plan will run and the context (the above payload) will be available in the incident summary and context templates and the message templates.

    Unfortunately, if we want to react to all incidents in the same way (i.e. page an on-call primary and, if they don't answer, the secondary) but want to pages to be received by different teams, we must create a plan (or potentially plans) for each team, and set the iris_plan label on each alert to be team specific (i.e. iris_plan: "page-engineer-demo-team". Ideally we'd be able to use the existing dynamic_targets feature on plans so that we only need to create one plan which could be reused by all teams.

    Also, each incident has the title "alertmanager" (the name of the application). Though we can set an <h1>{{groupLabels.alertname}}</h1> in the context templates, it would be nice if this feature was supported for the AlertManager integration.

    Feature request

    In the AlertManager integration it'd be great if we could pull up the alertname field from groupLabels if it exists, and allow users to set dynamic targets in alert labels.

    labels:
        alertname: "Demo service is down"
        iris_plan: page-engineer
        iris_targets: '[{"role": "oncall-primary","target": "demo-team"},{"role": "oncall-secondary","target": "demo-team"}]'
