Consider the actual data that you will be using in your project and help to set the context for those unfamiliar with your work.What type(s) of data will be covered by the plan? This might be general information about the nature of the data to specific details such as the file formats used. What makes this the best type of data for this project?:

Data can come from many sources including gathering original information or building on previous work done by others.Where has the data come from and how was it collected? Think about whether you are collecting original data, reusing existing data or a combination of the two. Why was this data used instead of any other type of data? If you are reusing existing data you may need to consider any copyright issues such as obtaining permissions.:

All data gathered will need to be analysed in order to draw conclusions. This may be the work of one person or a group with individual responsibilities.Outline how the data will be analysed, who will be doing this analysis and which tools they will be using. You may also need to explain why these tools and methods have been chosen. It is important to record this information in case of any issues at a later date.:

Most funders will expect to see some element of planning for the storage, organisation and security of data.How will the data be managed both during and beyond the project? Think about areas such as organisational strategy and file naming conventions and why these were selected. How will your data be backed up, where will it be stored and how long will it be retained after the project?:

You will need to ensure that any data sharing plans comply with mandates set by your funder.Think about how you will share your data - both with your collaborators during the project and the wider community upon completion. Will you add metadata and a README file? How will these be compiled? Consider which is the best repository to share your data and whether there will be any cost implications for this that you need to factor in to a budget.:

There are a range of ethical issues to consider with any project.Think carefully about whether your data contains any information which could be considered private or sensitive (for more information on these definitions can be found on the Cambridge Data website). Record how you plan to handle this information whilst still fulfilling any obligations for data sharing including any restrictions you need to implement.:

A named individual needs to have ultimate responsibility for the data gathered or used by a project. For individual projects this will be the researcher but for groups this may be the Principal Investigator. This person should oversee all aspects of data management and ensure that the DMP is followed and updated when needed. This decision (and any decisions about legacy planning) need to be made early in the project to avoid any confusion.:
