Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) is an open ecosystem that empowers AI developers to choose the right tools as their project evolves. ONNX provides an open source format for AI models, both deep learning and traditional ML. It defines an extensible computation graph model, as well as definitions of built-in operators and standard data types. Currently we focus on the capabilities needed for inferencing (scoring).

ONNX is widely supported and can be found in many frameworks, tools, and hardware. Enabling interoperability between different frameworks and streamlining the path from research to production helps increase the speed of innovation in the AI community. We invite the community to join us and further evolve ONNX.

Installation

Binaries

A binary build of ONNX is available from Conda, in conda-forge:

conda install -c conda-forge onnx

Source

If you have installed onnx on your machine, please pip uninstall onnx first before the following process of build from source.

Linux and MacOS

You will need an install of Protobuf and NumPy to build ONNX. One easy way to get these dependencies is via Anaconda:

You can then install ONNX from PyPi (Note: Set environment variable ONNX_ML=1 for onnx-ml):

pip install onnx

Alternatively, you can also build and install ONNX locally from source code:

python setup.py install

Note: When installing in a non-Anaconda environment, make sure to install the Protobuf compiler before running the pip installation of onnx. For example, on Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install protobuf-compiler libprotoc-dev
pip install onnx

Windows

If you are building ONNX from source on Windows, it is recommended that you also build Protobuf locally as a static library. The version distributed with conda-forge is a DLL and this is a conflict as ONNX expects it to be a static library.

Note that the instructions in this README assume you are using Visual Studio. It is recommended that you run all the commands from a shell started from "Developer Command Prompt for VS 2019" and keep the build system generator for cmake (e.g., cmake -G "Visual Studio 16 2019") consistent.

Build Protobuf and ONNX on Windows

Step 1: Build Protobuf locally

If you are building ONNX on an ARM 64 device, please make sure to install the dependencies appropriately.

Verify Installation

After installation, run

to verify it works.

Common Errors

Environment variables: USE_MSVC_STATIC_RUNTIME (should be 1 or 0, not ON or OFF)

CMake variables: ONNX_USE_PROTOBUF_SHARED_LIBS, Protobuf_USE_STATIC_LIBS

If ONNX_USE_PROTOBUF_SHARED_LIBS is ON then Protobuf_USE_STATIC_LIBS must be OFF and USE_MSVC_STATIC_RUNTIME must be 0. If ONNX_USE_PROTOBUF_SHARED_LIBS is OFF then Protobuf_USE_STATIC_LIBS must be ON and USE_MSVC_STATIC_RUNTIME can be 1 or 0.

Note that the import onnx command does not work from the source checkout directory; in this case you'll see ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'onnx.onnx_cpp2py_export'. Change into another directory to fix this error.

Building ONNX on Ubuntu works well, but on CentOS/RHEL and other ManyLinux systems, you might need to open the CMakeLists file and replace all instances of /lib with /lib64.

If you want to build ONNX on Debug mode, remember to set the environment variable DEBUG=1. For debug versions of the dependencies, you need to open the CMakeLists file and append a letter d at the end of the package name lines. For example, NAMES protobuf-lite would become NAMES protobuf-lited.

You can also use the onnx-dev docker image for a Linux-based installation without having to worry about dependency versioning.

Testing

ONNX uses pytest as test driver. In order to run tests, you will first need to install pytest:

pip install pytest nbval

After installing pytest, use the following command to run tests.

pytest

    Reference implementation for onnx operators (python runtime for onnx)

    Description and Motivation

    This PR addresses issue #4432. It proposes a reference implementation for onnx operators through a runtime following the same API as onnxruntime. This python runtime can also be used to test function body. Currently, there is no way to check the body of a function validates the backend tests. This can also be used to validate other runtime or add more backend tests.

    This work comes from a python runtime I wrote to easily check the onnx model built with a converter. onnxruntime is a fast runtime but it cannot be easily use to debug a model, like display intermediate results. This is another goal of this runtime. The runtime only depends on python and numpy.

    1. Add "cubic" interpolation mode, and clarify the "linear", "bilinear" and "trilinear" (https://github.com/onnx/onnx/issues/1774)
    2. Update the tests: The current tests of resize linear follows the old behavior of TF, which is changed now. Related issue: https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/issues/6720, https://github.com/onnx/onnx/issues/2070
    3. Add "coordinate_transformation_mode" attribute including "half_pixel", "align_corners", "asymmetric", "tf_crop_and_resize" and so on
    4. Add a new input 'sizes' as requested in #2062.
    5. Add two new attrs 'cubic_coeff_a' and 'exclude_outside' for the compatibility with TensorFlow. There is no standard implementation of cubic interpolation. TensorFlow (and also matlab) sets a=-0.5 (In the legacy version of TF, a=-0.75) and exclude_outside=True, while PyTorch (and OpenCV) sets a=-0.75 and exclude_outside=False

    Both cubic interpolation mode and align_corners attribute are supported by tensorflow, pytorch and so on.

    Note:

    • Some frameworks set output_dimension to round(input_dimension * scale) instead of floor(input_dimension * scale), some frameworks re-assign the scale to output_dimension / input_dimension. I think it is not good to add two extra attributes in resize op for these cases. This op has many attributes already, and the converters in frameworks have the ability and responsibility to make the scale compatible with the behavior of this op.

    • This proposal is fully compatible with TensorFlow and PyTorch. Please refer to the checking script for the attribute values

    I settled on the word standard_denotation b/c denotation seems to imply "direct meaning". This helps to convey the idea that such denotation is for the algorithms not for some programmer's high level perception. In other words, such dimension annotations will be taken and propagated "literally".

Because ONNX Training Spec is in preview and subject to change, it's better to put related operators to a domain which does not interact with other operators.     The logic in onnx_pb.h is wrong, and the logic in CMakeLists.txt just follows the wrong one.

    ONNX_IMPORT is only set when ONNX_BUILD_SHARED_LIBS or ONNX_BUILD_MAIN_LIB is defined, but only used when ONNX_BUILD_SHARED_LIBS or ONNX_BUILD_MAIN_LIB is not defined. It is not the expected behavior and causes windows shared lib build fails (CI doesn't check it).

    ONNX Optimization Rewrite

    I'd like to start off this convo by providing a skeleton of what the optimization framework will look like.

    We first define a set of enums which describe general attributes of the pass. For example we have PassType (e.g. fuse/nop), PassEfficiency (e.g. partial, complete), PassOptimizationType (e.g. memory, compute, stability). These attributes of the pass will help up build better PassManagers.

    A pass contains a couple of methods. It can give you it's name as well as it's attributes. It has the ability to initialize a pass given a graph as well as finalize it. Finally it contains the runPass method which works both on IR and Proto (although we should think about only supporting IR. I don't see a fundamental benefit to optimizing over Proto).

    The runPass method returns a PostPassAnalysis which provides some information about what the pass has done (e.g. did initialization? did finalization? number transformers applied?) this is useful when deciding to do things such as fixed point optimization.

    One fundamental type of pass we implement is PredicateBasedPass. A lot of code reuse is happening in the code framework wrt DescendOnGraphAttributes. The way we solve this is by using a PredicateBasedPass where one implements the predicate for when the transform will be applied as well as the transform. Our backend takes care of DescendOnGraphAttributes/PassAnalysis in a way agnostic to the user writing the pass.

    Patching CVE-2007-4559

    Hi, we are security researchers from the Advanced Research Center at Trellix. We have began a campaign to patch a widespread bug named CVE-2007-4559. CVE-2007-4559 is a 15 year old bug in the Python tarfile package. By using extract() or extractall() on a tarfile object without sanitizing input, a maliciously crafted .tar file could perform a directory path traversal attack. We found at least one unsantized extractall() in your codebase and are providing a patch for you via pull request. The patch essentially checks to see if all tarfile members will be extracted safely and throws an exception otherwise. We encourage you to use this patch or your own solution to secure against CVE-2007-4559. Further technical information about the vulnerability can be found in this blog.

    Unity 3D has a system to load onnx files: https://docs.unity3d.com/Packages/[email protected]/manual/index.html Unfortunately currently not all onnx files load without bugs. For example none of these files work so far: https://huggingface.co/bes-dev/stable-diffusion-v1-4-onnx/tree/main

    My request is that maybe people from onnx can help Unity make their system work better. 😁 (I am not from Unity) This is just an idea for you to think about.

    In the linux build instructions for installing Protobuf from source it says "Once build is successful, update PATH to include protobuf paths."

    I'm wondering if a code snippet could be added there to show which paths need to be added? Building protobuf produces a build_source directory that includes protoc, libprotobuf.a, libprotobuf-lite.a, etc. but it seems like cmake also wants protobuf's src directory for the Protobuf_INCLUDE_DIR cmake arg?

    I haven't added anything to my PATH yet, and have just been responding to cmake's complaints by adding more CMAKE_ARGS. Here's what I've currently added:

    -DONNX_USE_LITE_PROTO=ON
    -DProtobuf_INCLUDE_DIR=/workspaces/onnx/protobuf/src
    -DProtobuf_LIBRARIES=/workspaces/onnx/protobuf/build_source
    -Dpybind11_DIR=/usr/local/python/3.10.4/lib/python3.10/site-packages/pybind11/share/cmake/pybind11
    

    However, it's now complaining about DProtobuf_LITE_LIBRARY, which I'm guessing should point to /workspaces/onnx/protobuf/build_source/libprotobuf-lite.a, but that's just a guess.

    I think I'm going to try adding protobuf/build_source to my path now to see if that fixes it. It would be very handy to have instructions as part of the install for newbies like myself.

    • A set of new training features are introduced to represent neural network models in the process of model training.

    TL;DR

    • The ONNX project now has more than 27 companies on board and 31 runtimes, converters, frameworks and other tools officially supporting ONNX.
    • This release added several big features including support for large models (larger than 2GB) and store the data externally, enhanced support for control flow operators, added a test driver for ONNXIFI enabling C++ tests.
    • IR version is bumped from 3 to 4 and the opset version from 8 to 9.

    Breaking changes

    onnx.proto underwent breaking changes that makes earlier serialized protobufs invalid. We commit to have all changes to the protobuf structure backward-compatible after this (v0.2) release.

    • Related API changes renaming graph to model
